Laser Hair Removal was among the first applications of a cosmetic laser historically. Over time, technology has continued to evolve and become safer and more effective. Also, we can treat patients of any skin ethnicity.
Laser Hair removal targets the pigment or color at the root of the hair follicles, known as melanin. It therefore works best on pigmented hairs. White, gray and blond hairs have limited to no response unless one uses Meladine* in advance. The rich amount of melanin in the actively growing hair follicles will absorb the laser energy preferentially. The heat causes disruption and destruction to the hair root. Hairs that are dormant will surface in time for the next treatment cycle. It usually takes five treatments on average to achieve a good reduction in total numbers of hairs.
After treatment, you will notice mild redness for up to 15-30 minutes. Sometimes the hair follicles become a little inflamed and swollen, which is a good indication of an effective treatment. If you are suffering from ingrown hairs, this is an excellent procedure as the laser will seek out those hairs beneath the skin surface and still be able to target them.
*Meladine: This is a spray on product that allows light colored hairs to be better recognized by the laser. We have found it helps in about 50% of our patients who use it. It is available at our office.
