How Exilis Ultra Plus works
The monopolar radiofrequency energy works on the principle of resistance. When the device is set to target fat, the RF energy preferentially heats the fat cells while the skin stays relatively cooler. Held at a set temperature for a set period of time, those fat cells die off, which gives long-lasting improvement similar to CoolSculpting, SculpSure, Vanquish ME or Vaser Liposuction.
The same energy can be set to target the skin instead, stimulating new collagen and elastin to grow and tightening the skin without affecting the fat beneath it. Different handpieces and settings target different areas, and in some cases both are applied in sequence: reduce the fat, then tighten the skin over it. What makes Exilis Ultra Plus unusual is that it also delivers high intensity focused ultrasound, much like Ultherapy, so you receive both energy sources at once.
Body contouring. On the arms, abdomen, love handles, bra fat, buttock or thighs, the fat cells are heated to target temperature and die off. The fat is carried away through the lymphatic system over the next 6 to 12 weeks.
Neck and face contouring. Eliminates submental fat while tightening the skin at the same time. It works as a standalone treatment and also combines well with Kybella, Vaser Liposuction, or as a follow-up to CoolSculpting.
Skin tightening. Tightens jowls and neck, lifts the upper eyelids, and softens under-eye wrinkles and puffiness. It also tightens skin anywhere else on the body, including arms, thighs and stomach.
Cellulite reduction. Heats the fat cells to reduce the bulges, heats the skin to induce tightening, and softens and stretches the fibrous bands that cause dimpling, by improving blood flow and through mechanical manipulation.
Comfort, recovery and how many treatments
We recommend four treatments for body contouring, spaced one to two weeks apart, and three treatments spaced three weeks apart for facial skin tightening and neck contouring.
Exilis Ultra Plus feels warm over the treated area but does not hurt. Some mild pressure is applied to keep good contact between the handpiece and the skin, and the handpiece glides continuously over the area for the duration. There is a cooling plate on the underside of the applicator for added comfort. Patients describe it as a comfortable deep tissue massage. Some areas such as the inner arms are a little more sensitive than others, but always tolerable.
There is no downtime. There may be temporary pinkness or redness in the skin for about 20 to 30 minutes, which quickly subsides. Since no special care is required once you leave the office, you can carry on with the rest of your day immediately.
Exilis Ultra Plus can cause some redness after treatment, and mild swelling in some cases. These subside within 30 to 60 minutes. You might feel continued warmth in the treated area, which settles within 10 to 20 minutes.
Be well hydrated before, during and after your treatments. Hydration helps the radiofrequency energy interact with the target tissue, and it matters for both the fat loss and the skin tightening protocols. Light exercise for 30 to 40 minutes after a fat reduction treatment helps stimulate faster fat elimination through the lymphatics.
Maintenance treatments once a quarter keep skin tightening and cellulite reduction results at their best. They are optional, but encouraged at whatever interval you are able to follow.
