Intimate Wellness

Childbirth and menopause change intimate tissue in ways that affect comfort and confidence. These are non-surgical, in-office treatments with no recovery time.

What is actually going on

Two things change intimate tissue, and they change it in different ways. Childbirth stretches, and sometimes tears, both the vaginal tissue and the muscle beneath it. Menopause lowers estrogen, and estrogen is what keeps that tissue thick, elastic, and naturally lubricated. The result is some combination of dryness, thinning, laxity, discomfort during intercourse, reduced sensation, and often urinary symptoms alongside. Half of all women experience vaginal discomfort at some point in their lives, and of those who do, 80 percent say it affects their quality of life. It is physiology, not a personal failing.

The starting point is which symptom is bothering you most, because the treatments approach the area differently: one works on the tissue itself, the others on the pelvic floor muscle. Dryness, thinning, irritation, and pain with intercourse are tissue quality problems. Laxity, reduced sensation, and leaking can come from either side, which is why ThermiVa treats them through the tissue while EMSELLA and Emvagin treat them through the pelvic floor muscle. Most people arrive with a mixture, and a consultation decides where to start.

One boundary is worth stating plainly. When you have incontinence or other troubling symptoms, you need to see a medical professional, because there could be something more serious going on.

Tissue on one side, muscle on the other

ThermiVa treats the tissue. A slim handpiece delivers gentle radiofrequency warmth to the internal and external tissue, holding it at a controlled temperature that stimulates collagen production and improves blood flow, so the tissue improves in tone, elasticity, and hydration over the following weeks. There are no incisions and no needles. It requires no anesthesia, feels like a warm internal massage, takes around half an hour, and is typically done as a short series of treatments spaced about a month apart. There is no recovery period and no restriction on activity, including intercourse, afterwards.

Emvagin approaches the same region through the muscle instead. Electromagnetic energy stimulates the pelvic floor and the surrounding musculature to contract, building strength and tone rather than changing the surface lining. Where the complaint is laxity or reduced sensation that comes from a weakened muscular envelope rather than from thin, dry tissue, strengthening is what actually addresses it.

EMSELLA works the same muscle group and is the one people find easiest to accept, because you remain fully clothed and simply sit on a chair for about half an hour while a focused electromagnetic field produces thousands of pelvic floor contractions. Nothing is inserted. A course is usually six sessions over a few weeks, with no recovery time at all. A strong pelvic floor underpins bladder control, sensation, and support generally, which is why it turns up in almost every plan here.

The three address different parts of the same picture, and your provider designs a plan around the symptoms that actually bother you. ThermiVa for comfort, dryness, and tissue quality. EMSELLA or Emvagin for strength and support. None of them involve surgery, general anesthesia, or time away from work, and appointments are short and private.

Choosing by symptom rather than by device

Work backwards from what actually bothers you. If it is dryness, irritation, and discomfort during intercourse, that is tissue, and ThermiVa is the direct answer. If it is laxity, weak sensation, or leaking when you cough or exercise, EMSELLA and Emvagin work on the pelvic floor muscle, and ThermiVa can help with these through the tissue as well, so this is the point where a consultation decides the order.

Candidacy is worth settling early. Women who are pregnant or who have certain medical conditions are not ideal candidates, and your medical history is reviewed at consultation to be sure this is a good fit for you.

Many people notice something after the first treatment, usually increased lubrication and mild tightening, but the more significant results develop over several weeks and across the full series. They are not permanent, because estrogen levels and muscle conditioning keep doing what they were doing. Most people return for maintenance once or twice a year to sustain their results. That is a reasonable ongoing commitment and it is better to plan for it than to be surprised by it.

The last thing worth saying is that vaginal health is a common but somewhat taboo topic, and these concerns often go unspoken rather than being raised with a clinician. There is no version of this conversation that is unusual to us. A consultation is a normal medical discussion about symptoms, an examination where one is warranted, and a plan, and it will also identify the cases that need further evaluation before any treatment is started.
