Botox for Migraines

Chronic migraines can take over a life. Botox is an FDA-authorized treatment that, in modest doses, interrupts the nerve signals involved in migraine pain and can reduce how often attacks come and how hard they hit. We plan the treatment for you after a comprehensive assessment, usually when medications and lifestyle changes have not been enough.

How Botox helpschronic migraines

A migraine is more than a bad headache. It is a nervous system abnormality that produces throbbing, often one-sided head pain along with nausea and sensitivity to light and sound, and an attack can last hours to days. When migraines strike fifteen or more days a month, they are considered chronic.

Botox is highly purified botulinum toxin. Injected in modest doses at specific points around the head and neck, it stops nerve signals from traveling to the brain and prevents the release of the neurotransmitters that trigger migraine pain. It is not a cure, and relief is usually not immediate: several sessions may be needed before the frequency and severity of attacks decrease.

Care begins with a comprehensive assessment, and we may suggest Botox when medications and lifestyle modifications have not helped. It works best alongside conventional care, avoiding trigger foods and drinks such as caffeine and alcohol, managing stress in healthy ways, and getting enough sleep. Some patients eventually reduce their attacks enough to stop migraine medication; others benefit from injections on an ongoing basis.

Frequently asked questions

Can Botox help treat my migraines?

Possibly. We begin with a comprehensive assessment and may suggest Botox when medications and lifestyle modifications have not helped. It is an FDA-authorized treatment for chronic migraines, but it is planned case by case.

Am I a good candidate?

Candidates are adults 18 and over who have headaches on eight or more days per month, with migraine symptoms on at least eight of those days, and whose migraines have persisted despite other therapies.

How does Botox reduce migraines?

In modest doses, botulinum toxin stops nerve signals from traveling to the brain and prevents the release of the neurotransmitters that induce migraine pain. This can reduce both how often attacks occur and how severe they are.

How long does treatment take?

Usually one session per round of treatment, lasting under 30 minutes. There are up to 31 possible injection sites; your provider chooses the actual sites from your anatomy and pain regions.

Where is it injected?

Typical areas are the scalp and forehead, the bridge of the nose, the temples, and the back of the neck and head.

Is it painful?

A very thin needle is used, and patients seldom report discomfort. You can leave immediately after the injections.

Is there any downtime?

No. For 24 hours you should avoid intense exercise, washing your hair, hot tubs and saunas, and rubbing the injection sites.

How soon will my migraines improve?

Relief may not be immediate. Several sessions may be needed before the frequency and severity of attacks decrease.

Will I still need my migraine medication?

It varies. Some patients reduce their attacks enough to stop migraine medication, while others continue their usual care alongside ongoing injections. Botox works best in tandem with conventional treatment: avoiding trigger foods and drinks, healthy stress relief, and enough sleep.

How much does Botox for migraines cost?

Cost varies by patient and by the severity of the migraines. Treatment is dosed in units, so you receive a customized quote at your consultation.
