Unwanted Hair

Laser hair removal disables the follicle during its growth phase, which is why it takes a series. Current systems are designed to treat a wide range of skin types and tones, with the device and settings chosen for your skin.

What is actually going on

Laser treatment works by turning the hair itself into a heat source. The laser fires a wavelength that the pigment in the hair shaft absorbs strongly, the shaft heats, and that heat conducts down into the follicle and damages the structures that produce the hair. Skin is spared because it absorbs much less of that wavelength. The skin is also cooled before and after the laser is applied, which keeps the treatment comfortable.

That mechanism only works while the follicle is in its growth phase. Hair cycles through a growth phase, a dormant phase and a shedding phase, and the laser only reaches follicles that are in the growth phase. A follicle that happens to be resting on the day of your appointment gives the laser nothing to grip, and it will push out a hair a few weeks later as though nothing had happened. At any moment only a portion of the follicles in an area are growing, and that portion differs by body site, which is the whole reason this is a series rather than an appointment.

The other thing worth knowing at the outset is that hair color and skin tone both matter. Laser hair removal is most effective when there is a stark contrast between the color of the hair and the skin tone, and darker skin tones have always been more challenging to treat safely. Current systems reach the follicle at wavelengths that pass through the pigment in the epidermis, so skin tone is a question of choosing the right device and the right settings rather than a question of eligibility.

Why the follicle has to be growing

Laser Hair Removal is done as a course of sessions spaced to catch follicles as they cycle back into growth. Each session treats the fraction that is growing that day, so density drops step by step rather than all at once, and some regions of the body need more sessions than others. Sessions are generally scheduled four to six weeks apart, so the timing follows the hair rather than the calendar.

How you manage the hair between sessions changes the outcome. Shaving is fine and is what we ask for, because the target is the pigmented shaft still sitting in the follicle. Waxing, plucking and electrolysis pull that shaft out entirely and take the target with it, so those have to stop well before a course begins and stay stopped until it is finished.

Skin tone is handled through wavelength. Longer wavelengths travel deeper and are absorbed less by the pigment in the epidermis, so darker skin can be treated by reaching past the surface rather than by turning the energy down until nothing useful happens. Cooling, conservative settings and a test area make up the rest of the safety margin. This is one of the places where being treated in a physician-led practice matters, because the settings are the safety mechanism.

The harder case is hair the laser can barely see. Blonde, grey, white and red hairs carry much less pigment for the laser to target, so they are more difficult to treat and may not respond as well. If that is the hair that bothers you, you should hear it at the consultation rather than after paying for a package.

What a realistic course looks like

The accurate term is permanent hair reduction rather than permanent removal. A completed course generally leaves an area with far fewer hairs, and the ones that do come back tend to be finer, lighter and slower. Occasional maintenance treatments may be recommended depending on your hair type and hormonal factors. That is a very good outcome, and it is a different promise from never seeing a hair again.

How well it goes also depends on what is driving the hair. Coarse dark hair on the underarms, bikini area, legs, chest and back responds best. Hormonal factors can trigger new hair growth over time, which is why some areas improve well but come with ongoing maintenance rather than an end date.

Preparation is simple and it matters. Arrive with the area shaved and with no recent sun exposure or self-tanner, because a tan makes it harder for the laser to distinguish the hair from the skin. Tell us about your medications, since several common ones increase light sensitivity. Afterward you may notice mild redness or swelling, similar to a mild sunburn, which usually subsides within a few hours, and over the next couple of weeks the treated hairs work their way out of the skin.

A consultation sorts out skin type, hair color, hair density and your goals, along with anything you are currently taking, and it may also include a test pulse of the laser after the equipment is adjusted to your treatment needs. It also settles the honest question of whether this is worth it for you, which depends on the color and texture of your hair, the area being treated, and how much hair is being removed.
