Mommy Makeover
A mommy makeover combines the procedures that address what pregnancy and nursing change, usually a tummy tuck with breast surgery and liposuction, performed together so there is one recovery rather than three.
What is amommy makeover?
A mommy makeover is not one procedure. It is a plan that combines several body contouring operations into a single surgical session, most often a tummy tuck, a breast procedure such as a lift, augmentation or reduction, and liposuction of areas like the flanks, hips, thighs or back. What goes into it differs from patient to patient, so no two are the same and there is no standard version of it.
The reason to combine rather than stage is straightforward. Pregnancy changes the abdomen, the breasts and the way fat sits on the body at the same time, and correcting one while leaving the others often reads as unbalanced. Combining also means one anesthetic instead of three and one recovery period instead of three. Non-surgical fat reduction and skin tightening have a real role and we offer them, but they act on fat and on skin quality. They do not remove hanging skin, and they do not repair abdominal muscles that separated during pregnancy. Where those are the problem, surgery is the only thing that addresses them.
Surgery is performed by Dr. Balvant Arora, a board-certified plastic, reconstructive and cosmetic surgeon, in our accredited in-house surgical suite in Cincinnati. He is also direct about when a combined session is not the right idea. Patients who need extensive work, or who have medical conditions that make a long anesthetic less advisable, are sometimes better served by staging the procedures across two operations.

You are at or near a stable goal weight and are not planning significant weight loss afterward.

You are in good general health and can safely tolerate a single longer anesthetic.

Where a mommy makeoverworks
A mommy makeover spans more than one region because pregnancy changes the abdomen, the breasts and the way fat sits on the body at the same time. Correcting one area while leaving the others often reads as unbalanced.

What the surgery involves and how long it takes
Planning starts with deciding which procedures are included, because that decision drives everything else. On average a combined mommy makeover takes about four to six hours. Performed together the individual procedures overlap, so the total is shorter than the same procedures done separately.
Tummy tuck. Two and a half to three hours.
Breast lift or augmentation. One and a half to two hours.
Liposuction. One to two hours, depending on how many areas are treated.
The operation is performed under general anesthesia. Afterward you spend time in our recovery area under supervision and go home the same day with a responsible adult who can stay with you. Before you leave we go through pain management, care of drains or compression garments where they apply, how much you should be moving, and when to return for follow-up.
Cost follows the plan rather than a price list. The number and type of procedures, the complexity of the correction, anesthesia and facility fees, and recovery supplies all vary, which is why there is no single figure for a mommy makeover. You receive a complete estimate at consultation instead of a number over the phone. These procedures are cosmetic and generally are not covered by insurance, and financing through CareCredit is available.
Recovery week by week
Full healing takes longer than most people expect. You will see change within the first month, but judging the outcome that early means judging a body that is still swollen.
The first two weeks are the demanding part. Swelling and bruising typically peak around days three to five, the abdomen and chest feel tight, and mobility is limited enough that you will need help getting out of bed, preparing meals and caring for children. Arrange that help before surgery, not after. Most patients take ten to fourteen days away from work and normal responsibilities, and should plan on two to three weeks of downtime overall before resuming daily activity.
By weeks three and four most patients feel noticeably better and can manage light household tasks, a desk job if cleared, and gradually more walking. Lifting anything heavy, including your children, and high impact exercise are still out. Around weeks five and six most are cleared for light to moderate exercise, and for driving once they are off prescription pain medication. It is sensible to keep travel and major events off the calendar for four to six weeks.
Swelling keeps decreasing for months, scars soften and lighten gradually, and the final result generally settles somewhere between three and six months, occasionally longer.

When will I see the final result?
You will notice change within the first month, but the final result usually takes three to six months as swelling resolves and tissues settle. Scars continue to fade past that point. Follow-up visits through this period let us track healing and deal with anything that comes up.
Should I wait until I am done having children?
Yes, that is the standard advice. A later pregnancy stretches the abdominal skin and the muscle repair again and can change the breasts, which can undo what the surgery corrected. The same logic applies to weight: it is better to reach a stable weight before surgery than to plan significant weight loss after it.
